According to journalist Dean Jones, there is a possibility that Leeds United may retain young attacker Joe Gelhardt beyond the January transfer window, despite the limited game-time he has experienced this season.
Gelhardt, who initially garnered high expectations at Elland Road under the guidance of coach Marcelo Bielsa, signed a new contract at the start of the 2022–23 season, binding him to the club until at least 2027. However, he was loaned out to Championship side Sunderland in January of the same season.
During his loan spell at the Stadium of Light, Gelhardt made 20 appearances, contributing three goals as Sunderland reached the playoffs but eventually lost in the semi-final to Luton Town. With Leeds United relegated from the Premier League, it was anticipated that Gelhardt would see increased playing time under new head coach Daniel Farke.
However, he has only featured five times in the championship, totaling 164 minutes on the pitch and has yet to score in the league. Despite being linked with a £6 million move away from the club, Jones suggests that Gelhardt might stay with Leeds for the remainder of the season.
Jones explained that Gelhardt’s potential stay could be influenced by the demanding nature of the championship, where the second half of the season involves a high number of games that can quickly pile up, especially if there are postponements.
Jones speculates that Leeds may be cautious about letting Gelhardt go in January, wanting to ensure they have enough depth in the squad to handle the challenges of the league. Gelhardt still possesses the capability to contribute if called upon, and the club may review the situation more thoroughly at the end of the season.
