West Ham player will not be able to leave in January as an issue arises

Thilo Kehrer is unlikely to leave West Ham in the January transfer window, despite his lack of playing time, according to Paul Brown.

Speaking to GiveMeSport on Wednesday (13 December), the former Daily Star journalist stated that he would be “surprised” if the German international left the Hammers because he believes they will not want to weaken their team after indicating that they may have depth difficulties later in the season.

He also stated that if the 27-year-old defender does not force his way back into contention, he may depart the Irons in the summer, although this may depend on whether or not they can sign a replacement for him.

“Kehrer hasn’t made a big impact this season, but I think West Ham will not be wanting to weaken their squad in any way in January,” Brown told the BBC. “I’d be surprised if they let a player like that leave.”

“They’re expecting to play a lot of games again this season, they’re going to have issues with their depth when we get to spring, and I don’t think Kehrer will leave.”

“If he’s still not playing by the summer and hasn’t found a way to force his way back into the manager’s thinking, it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s allowed to leave.” But I believe that depends on West Ham finding a successor. So I don’t suppose he’ll be traveling anyplace throughout the winter.”

West Ham recruited Kehrer from PSG last summer, and his expertise at club and international level appeared to be a good piece of business.

After playing extensively in the first part of the season, the versatile defender was demoted to the bench near the end of the season due to some underwhelming performances.

This season, the German has been demoted to the role of a bit-part player, having only played 18 minutes in the Premier League and having to make do with outings in cup tournaments.

He has suffered as a result of Vladimir Coufal’s outstanding form this season, as the Czech Republic right-back has been practically ever-present in the Hammers side.

However, Kehrer is still the backup option on the right side of defense, thus it appears doubtful that he would leave the London Stadium during the January transfer window.
