Celtic Champions League prize money has been disclosed, as the Hoops continue to amass wealth

Despite coming last in their group, Celtic earned a total of £29.7 million during their Champions League season.

The Hoops went into Wednesday night’s final meeting against Feyenoord knowing they were already out of Europe, as even a win would not be enough to beat the Dutch club to third place and the Europa League. But they weren’t taking it lightly, determined to end their long wait for a UCL success.

They accomplished this with Gustaf Lagerbielke’s stoppage-time winner, which sparked wild celebrations. Not only that, but it enabled them to add £2.4m to the funds amassed during their season in Europe’s top club championship.

According to accountant Chris Weatherspoon, the prize money, along with their participation fees, coefficient payout, and share of the TV pool, has netted them about £30 million.

Prior to yesterday night’s win, the Hoops had only avoided loss in one game, a draw at home to Atletico Madrid, which earned them about £1 million, bringing their total prize money from that game plus the win against the Dutch to £3.5 million.

Celtic are at the lower end of the income scale, but they did manage to match English giants Manchester United, who also went out after finishing bottom of their area, and more than Newcastle, who suffered heartbreak on the final day.
