Simon Jordan suggests 45-year-old manager should now take the Sunderland job
After Tony Mowbray’s recent departure, Simon Jordan has now backed a familiar name for the Sunderland job, one he believes is a big opportunity.
The pundit was speaking on talkSPORT today and believed that Frank Lampard should be in the running, a manager who could thrive at such a big club.
Jordan believed the Sunderland job would represent a huge chance for Lampard, a manager who would have a chance to embark on a rebuild.
Speaking after Mowbray’s departure, he said: “If you talk about football people who want to get back on the ladder then Frank Lampard.
“If you talk about football people with so much motivation, and Souness was saying that we are so lucky that he has so much money that he wants to do it, there are lots of people with money who will flog themselves to the next level, if Frank Lampard wants to do something then a football club of the size and stature of Sunderland, with the opportunity to rebuild.
“That would be an interesting job wouldn’t it?”
Of course, Lampard does have Championship experience given his 57 games with Derby County.
But having left his caretaker role at Chelsea in the summer and yet to manage since, some Sunderland fans may have mixed feelings about the idea.
Simon Jordan now backs Frank Lampard for the Sunderland job
When sacking Mowbray, Chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus said that the club “remain loyal to our ambition and our strategy.”
And given Lampard’s failure to succeed in his last few roles, fans may not see a synergy between the two ideas.
Lampard did elevate Derby to the play-offs, but ultimately wasn’t successful, and perhaps Sunderland don’t actually need the rebuild that Jordan mentioned.
Rather, they need a manager well equipped for success in the short-term given they still have strong chances this season.
There’s bound to be a lot of names linked with the Sunderland job, such is the size of the club, but Jordan’s Lampard suggestion may not be the one.
Perhaps some will even feel that Mowbray was let go too soon, although the side’s form is showing no sign of a improving.
And one former Sunderland player has now sent a five-word message to Mowbray following his sacking.
