Chris Lepkowski Names One West Brom Key Man Who May Depart The Hawthorns In January Transfer

Young goalkeeper Josh Griffiths is a player West Brom may look to cash in on during the January transfer window, according to Chris Lepkowski.

The uncertainty surrounding the takeover picture at The Hawthorns means that Albion may have to bring in further funds through player sales.

A number of first-team stars could attract interest from elsewhere, but Lepkowski does not believe a star name will depart next month.

Speaking on The Liquidator podcast [3 December, 17m 55s], former Birmingham Mail reporter Lepkowski said: “We are where we are in the league and have some really good players.

“Might we see one or two of those being pitched for moves in January? One that immediately springs to mind is Griffiths, who is very highly rated.

“We don’t want to lose any first-team players, and I’m not too concerned about that.”

Money may be needed

The fact that so many key men are due to be out of contract at the end of the season is surely on the minds of West Brom chiefs.

Albion supporters will hope that Guochuan Lai is ousted before the January window opens, but if not the club will have a big decision to make.

A second loan carried out with MSD Holdings last week keeps West Brom ticking over for the time being, but it is not a long-term resolution.

If this takeover uncertainty continues towards the summer, fans will have every right to be concerned about what is next.

Selling a player such as Griffiths in January may therefore make sense, especially given he has yet to feature in the league this season.

The 22-year-old is highly regarded and was linked with Newcastle United not so long ago, so that may be one to keep an eye on.

In an ideal world, that will not be a decision that is forced on the club. If that is to be the case, these talks with interested parties need to ramp up very soon indeed.
