Newcastle likely to pay Everton £5million – journalist claims

Everton are in line to receive a further £5million from the sale of Anthony Gordon as the add-ons included in the deal look “likely to be paid”, according to Martin Hardy.

The Times journalist said on the paper’s website on 4 December that the winger’s move to Newcastle looks “money well spent” for the Magpies after he scored the winner in their 1-0 victory over Manchester United two days earlier.

 

That came after 22-year-old had scored and assisted in Newcastle’s 4-1 win over Chelsea the week before, to take his total on the season to six goals and five assists in the Premier League.

Gordon’s form at St. James’ Park has led Hardy to claim that the Toffees should receive the full amount of the £45m deal agreed in January last season.

Silver lining

The Anthony Gordon story at Goodison Park started strongly and ultimately went sour to the point that he isn’t viewed particularly fondly by sections of the fanbase.

But since it is coming up to a year that he’s been gone from the club the only positive effect he can have on Everton now is ensuring he hits all the triggers for the clauses included in the transfer that took him to the North East.

The 10-point deduction for a profit and sustainability breach has already rocked the Toffees’ season and there are fears that subsequent accounting periods could cause further problems

So incoming money is clearly crucial to the club amid an ongoing rough period and with the former academy product ultimately sacrificed to help balance the books Everton will clearly want to get the maximum amount back.

With Dwight McNeil, scorer of a stunning winner at Nottingham Forest at the weekend, and Jack Harrison performing well, and crucially with Dominic Calvert-Lewin largely available at striker this season, Sean Dyche’s side aren’t missing Gordon’s ability like they did at times last term.

 

It will still not be a happy sight for plenty of supporters to see the former Toffees youth team player thriving in the Premier League elsewhere when it should have been in a blue shirt, but with that ship now long-sailed a few more million in return will have to do.

 

In other Everton news, a pundit is “surprised” by transfer developments and believes the Dyche’s side will be “kicking themselves” as a result.
