Anthony Watson and the Leicester Tigers have reached an agreement on a new contract that will see the international player rejoin the team in December.
After joining the Tigers from Bath Rugby, where he played for the Gallagher Premiership team for ten years and made over 100 appearances, the 29-year-old played for the team in the 2022–2023 season.
After progressing through The Exiles’ junior ranks, Watson made his professional debut with London Irish before joining Bath in 2013.
Before making his senior England Test debut in 2014, he played for the Irish while representing England at the Under-20 level.
After being picked for the 2017 and 2019 Rugby World Cups, Watson played five Test matches for the British and Irish Lions. Watson has made 55 appearances for England in international competitions, including the Rugby World Cups in 2015 and 2019.
“To secure a player of Anthony’s quality and experience on a new deal is fantastic news, and I am certain our supporters are as pleased as we are with the announcement,” Leicester Tigers Head Coach Dan McKellar continued in his remarks regarding Watson’s new contract.
“After just one season with the Leicester Tigers, he has proven to be a tremendous addition, and his skill set definitely fits our system and the direction we want to take it. He has played the game at the highest levels for a number of years.
“We are excited to have Anthony rejoin the group in December.”
Watson stated, “Really happy to get the deal over the line and restart my journey with the Tigers,” in reference to the new contract.
“I had a great time playing for the Tigers last season; the team, personnel, and supporters were all top-notch.
“My ultimate ambition hasn’t changed; I came here to join a fantastic team and win things. I want to do all in my power to help the squad and organization succeed. With this team and the new coaching staff, I’m looking forward to the upcoming year.
