Ryan Reynolds has helped reverse the fortunes of Welsh club Wrexham, but success has come at a high price.

Deadpool actor Reynolds bought the Welsh club in 2021 with fellow Hollywood star Rob McElhenney for £2 million, but that figure has since exploded. After missing out on promotion in their first season, the Red Dragons ended a 15-year exile from the Football League after winning the National League with a record haul of 114 points.

The success made Reynolds and McElhenney instant heroes in the Welsh city but the amount of money it has cost the celebrity owners to take the club back into the EFL was a sobering realisation for Reynolds.

Wrexham’s journey is followed by the hugely popular Disney Plus TV series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ and it is during the opening stages of series two that Reynolds is informed by the club’s advisor Shaun Harvey that they have spent a further £10 million since buying the Red Dragons.

I’m going to throw up,” says a stunned Reynolds. Business partner McElhenney then asks when they can expect to start seeing a return on their investment. Harvey said: “The value that’s coming from the global appeal we’ve been able to create is going to offset those additional costs that we’ve created.

“The biggest thing that will change on promotion, [is] people can see the value of Welcome to Wrexham. They can see the value of the profile that’s being built. That’s when the additional sponsorship revenue can be generated.”

The Hollywood actors were also reassured by their advisor that if they were to sell the club now, they could expect to receive significantly more than their initial £10 million outlay. The club’s rising value is due in part to its huge growth in social media exposure.
