Top player Kevin McDonald said of his trophy-winning performance, “I love when he gets angry.”

Tyler Smith, the City hat-trick hero, has earned praise from Kevin McDonald, who stated, “I love it when he’s angry.”

In last night’s 3-0 EFL Trophy victory over Manchester City under-21s at Valley Parade, Smith scored three goals in the first half.

Leading his final match before letting Mark Trueman take over as interim manager, McDonald was thrilled to see the former Hull striker blossom.

He remarked, “Tyler has been frustrated by his lack of opportunities.”

But he did what Ty, as everyone in that dressing room knows, is capable of doing. His goals come from staying on the backline and cutting in behind.

But he did what Ty, as everyone in that dressing room knows, is capable of doing. His goals come from staying on the backline and cutting in behind.
They are already through the knockout stages before hosting the Tykes later this month.

McDonald added, “We came here to do a job. We got the win, and we’re through to the next round.

“From a performance point of view, we were really good at times, but we were also poor at others.

“But the main thing was to win and get lads on the pitch who haven’t played games and could show what they are all about for a new manager coming in and for themselves.

“Everyone applied themselves, and it was a good night’s work.”
McDonald admitted there were periods of the game when their opponents were a joy to watch.City struggled to get on the ball at times as the technical ability of the Manchester City youngsters shone through.

“I give credit to a Manchester City team that is fluent at playing football,” he said. “The timing of their movements and the way they pass the ball were good to watch, and I’m sure people in our crowd thought the same.

“I told the lads there would be times when we would be pinned in because of the way they are structured to play.

“That is constructed top-down. I believe that philosophy permeates the entire football team, which is the best in the world. They are just a step or two away from playing in Manchester City’s starting lineup.

But we were aware that there would be room to play. We were able to nick the ball in specific spots, as we had anticipated, and that’s how we scored the goals.

“I wish we had shown a little more bravery when in control. Because we have good players here, I believe we can, not just in one game but in the entire one, and that irritates me.
