Bradford City Closing In On New Manager
Bradford City are set to offer Dean Holden the chance to succeed Mark Hughes this week, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
The Bantams have been without a full-time boss since parting company with Hughes at the beginning of the month, with midfielder Kevin McDonald leading the team on an interim basis since. The 34-year-old appeared to steady the ship somewhat, recording three successive wins in all competitions before their form turned again.
A 1-1 draw with League Two title challengers Wrexham followed, before a 4-1 hammering at MK Dons. The Yorkshire side then suffered a shock defeat against basement side Sutton United yesterday in what could be McDonald’s last outing as caretaker manager.
It was reported earlier this week that former Charlton Athletic boss Holden was amongst the candidates listed to fill the vacant role at Valley Parade after departing the Addicks in August. A drop to League Two now looks to be on the cards for the 44-year-old – a division he has never managed in.
Nixon states that Bradford may offer the former Oldham Athletic and Peterborough United defender the job this week, although league rivals Gillingham are also keen. The Gills are on the lookout for a new manager themselves after surprisingly sacking Neil Harris earlier this week, but could now turn to former Aston Villa and Newcastle United coach Stephen Clemence.
Holden was always going to be an attractive option for clubs in League Two and Bradford look set to bite the bullet in order to ward off interest from other teams. Aside from Gillingham, Grimsby Town are also on the search for a new manager and it is wise to make the decision before they also consider their prospects.
Whilst there was no rush to name Hughes’ successor, now looks to be the right time to take the step due to their recent poor form. They began the season as one of the favourites for promotion, but currently sit in 16th. However, they are just six points behind seventh-placed Accrington Stanley and there is still plenty of time to make up the deficit.
