What Kevin McDonald thought of Bantams’ loss at Sutton

 

KEVIN McDonald could not hide his frustration after City lost at bottom club Sutton this afternoon.

Harry Beautyman’s late header clinched a 2-1 win to make it back-to-back defeats this week for the caretaker boss.

 

“This is the most frustrating part of management,” he said. “It’s a huge blow for everyone involved.

 

“As much as we weren’t the best first half and looked a bit laboured, on the flipside we were good at times in the second half.

“If you start playing long ball against a team like Sutton, that’s what they want.

“It wasn’t what I wanted us to do. I’m sure the fans were unhappy and rightly so.

 

“You need to move a team like that and second half we did. We took the game to them, moved the ball quick and caused problems.

 

“The devastating thing for the lads is that we then conceded a poor goal.”

 

City fell behind early to Josh Coley before Andy Cook levelled early in the second half. He also crashed a volley against the bar and had a couple of other good chances.

 

McDonald added: “We were way off it at MK Dons and got battered. But that game was so frustrating.

 

“People will have said a draw would have been the fair result but when it went 1-1 we were in the ascendancy and I thought we’d go on and win the game.

 

“They didn’t have many chances second half but then we just switched off.

 

“We’re needing to work so hard for our goals and we’re only scoring ones just now. That’s also a big problem as a group.

 

“I’m more frustrated for the players. We’ve had a couple of bad results but that’s part of football.

 

“Sutton have had a tough start but fair play they’ve taken the three points today. We’ve got to dust ourselves down.”

 

McDonald made four changes from the MK Dons loss and Bobby Pointon was benched for Clarke Oduor’s first start for a month.

 

The Scot said: “Bobby was tired, like Ads (Adam Wilson), and at the same time you could have changed any of the forward players.

 

“Clarkey went in there and put in a good performance. He was lively and wanted to get on the ball and did everything asked of him.

 

“Bobby understood it. We were well below it in the final third at certain times on Tuesday – anyone who thinks different, I can assure you that wasn’t the case.

 

“We wanted Bobby to have a bit of an impact when he came on.

 

“He’s a young kid and will go through times when he comes out the team. That’s just part of it.”
