‘I love watching him’:Mathieu Debuchy now names the ‘fantastic’ Newcastle player who blows him away

Newcastle United have had major success in the transfer market in the PIF era.

While Bruno Guimaraes looks the standout in terms of increasing his value since joining Newcastle, there is another who can rival the Brazilian as the best signing the club have made.

Indeed, the impact Kieran Trippier has had on the club cannot be understated.

The £12m signing from Atletico Madrid has established himself as the club’s best right-back in years (perhaps in the modern era) and is now drawing praise from Toon stars of the past.

Mathieu Debuchy, who recently admitted he did not want to leave for Arsenal back in 2014, has been seriously impressed.

Newcastle news: Mathieu Debuchy issues glowing Kieran Trippier verdict

Debuchy was a good signing for Newcastle, performing well enough at right-back to earn a move to one of the biggest clubs in the world during a difficult period for the Toon Army.

Until Trippier, the club have not been blessed with stars in that position. Certainly, it would be difficult to argue that any of Daryl Janmaat, DeAndre Yedlin, Javier Manquillo or Emil Krafth reached the levels of the Frenchman.

Speaking to Craig Hope of The Daily Mail, Debuchy said: “Kieran Trippier is fantastic. I love watching him play. He is the best Newcastle right-back since me!”

Clearly, it’s difficult to measure the impact Trippier has had off the pitch. What he is doing on it, however, is much easier to quantify.

Alan Shearer named him as the current Newcastle player he’d love to have played alongside. As it that wasn’t praise enough, a look at the stats for this season further underline just what a top player the England international is.

As per WhoScored data, no player in Eddie Howe’s squad has contributed more than his five assists this season. On a per-game basis, he also leads the way for key passes (3.4) and ranks within the top five for tackles (1.6) and interceptions (0.9).

Even at 33, he’s doing the business at the very top level.
