The new Sandro Tonali claim from Italy as Newcastle United star hits front pages in home country
Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali has been at the centre of the storm in the Italian betting investigation
Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali has again found himself on the front pages of the newspapers in Italy this morning.
The Italy midfielder is now awaiting the length of a potential ban after admitting betting on Serie A matches while at AC Milan. Despite the revelations and his exit from the Italy squad, Newcastle have made it publicly clear they remain behind the £55million summer signing.
Here’s how the news is being reported in his home country.
The famous pink paper are expecting a one-year ban for Tonali and report that he placed bets on football during his time at AC Milan and Brescia. However, the publication also reports that he told the authorities that he had no debt off the back of his betting spree.
La Gazzetta also suggest that Tonali presented prosecutors with a certificate confirming his gambling addiction. There is also a story in the edition that says Nicolò Zaniolo did not bet on football.
Corriere dello Sport
The Rome-based newspaper says Tonali has asked the authorities for a “plea bargain” as he looks to get a reduced ban. The report also says that the “betting scandal” has reached Italian Parliament.
Tuttosport
The paper for sports fans in Turin understandably focuses on Juventus star Nicolò Fagioli and how the Serie A giants will stick by their man despite his part in the betting probe. However, there is also a line on Tonali too with Tuttosport suggesting that regardless of any attempts of the £55million man to get his ban shortened it won’t come in time for the European Championships next summer.
For all that, Italy are not even there yet and the Azzurri have it all to do in their last two matches of Group C. The 3-1 loss to England at Wembley means they require four points from their last two matches against North Macedonia and Ukraine. But because of their solid performances in the UEFA Nations League, Italy have at least a play-off spot in the bag if things go wrong.
