Barnsley Boss Issues Key Update On Future Of In Demand Forward

Barnsley manager Neill Collins has revealed there are no plans to loan out young forward Fabio Jalo, reports the Barnsley Chronicle.

The 17-year-old made his first start under Collins on Tuesday night, featuring for the entire 90 minutes of their 3-1 victory over Manchester City U21s in the EFL Trophy.

His 40-year-old head coach has now revealed the Portuguese U19 international could be set for a first appearance in League One this season within the next few weeks, rather than making the switch to a non-league side on loan.

Jalo was subject to strong interest from a host of top-flight clubs across Europe during the summer, with reports that Serie A side Lecce saw a six-figure bid turned down by the Tykes.

The closure of the transfer window in September saw the teenager remain at Oakwell, however, those restrictions do not apply to those below England’s top four divisions.

Furthermore, any player out on a long-term loan at a National League, National League North, or National League South side is eligible to play for their parent club in the EFL Trophy, but the former Tamper Bay Rowdies boss is keen to keep his starlet around the first-team picture.

Jalo arrived from his hometown club Benfica in 2019, with the Lisbon-born forward scoring twice in 14 games since his move to England.

What’s been said?

Collins told the Chronicle: “I was really pleased with him. He showed moments of real quality, he always looks a goal threat and linked up quite well with Max (Watters).

“We might see him prior to Bradford City (the next EFL Trophy game in November) but I am looking forward to different opportunities that might arise for him.

“Right now, Fabio will stay here and see what opportunities come. He’s not that far away from getting in the first team depending on injuries and form.”

After making 12 appearances in all competitions last season, and featuring in the Carabao Cup and EFL Trophy this term, it feels like this could be a real breakthrough campaign for the young forward.

The teenager is highly thought of in South Yorkshire, and is considered one of the best of his age group for his country, so it is understandable to see him knocking on the door for some minutes in the third tier.

The cynical view would also be to suggest that the 17-year-old is destined to play at a much higher level to what Barnsley currently find themselves at, so further first-team appearances could also help drive up the asking price when clubs inevitably come calling for his services once again.
