Birmingham City’s former midfielder turned under-18’s coach now has a job in football management.
Former Birmingham City player-turned-coach James Fry has a new coaching role.
The UEFA A Licence holder called time on his playing career in May, having come through the Blues academy.
He retired at just 28 years old and mainly played in the non-league for the likes of Kidderminster, Leamington, Stratford Town, Tamworth, and Bromsgrove Sporting before finishing his career at Rugby Town.
Fry held a coaching role within the academy set-up at St Andrew’s and led the under-18 squad to a play-off spot a few years ago.
He has now been granted one of his first roles in senior management, having been appointed as Alvechurch’s new first-team manager. Fry replaces Ian Long who left the club last week.
In a club statement, Alvechurch said: “Jimmy is a highly qualified, young, and talented coach who has most recently been working across the age groups at Birmingham City Football Club Academy program.
After several meetings, we concluded that he is unquestionably the best candidate to lead us into a new era. “His knowledge of the game certainly surprised us all,” said one participant.
Alvechurch are currently ranked fifteenth in the Southern League Premier Central, the sixth tier of English football, at the time of his employment. On Saturday, he will face Long Eaton United in his first game as coach. Fry will oversee Adan George, who joined The Church after being released from Birmingham City, thanks to his appointment at Alvechurch.
Along with the wonderful remarks from his new team describing his appointment, Alex Palmer, West Brom’s starting goalkeeper, congratulated him on the position and said: “Thoroughly deserved! Going to destroy it.
In other news, Sheffield Wednesday will be the next opponent for Birmingham City’s under-21 team on Tuesday, October 3.
The young Blues are in second place in the Professional Development League standings, three points behind Sheffield United, although they have two games left.
Birmingham’s under-18 squad, meanwhile, defeated Sheffield Wednesday by a score of 1-0 last Saturday. On Saturday, September 30, they will host Sheffield United at the Wast Hills Training Ground. After a perfect start to the season, Blues are in first place in the league.
