Roy Keane Talk And Rodgers Reveals Who Is Driving key Celtic Contract Talks

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Celtic are in talks with Reo Hatate’s agent over extending his hoops contract.

The midfielder has made a huge impact since moving to Scotland in January 2022, instantly establishing himself in the side and becoming a driving force alongside Callum McGregor and Matt O’Riley.

Hatate is already on a contract that runs until May 2026 but would be in line for a significant pay rise in return for adding 12 months onto his deal.

Asked about reports of a new deal for the midfielder Rodgers said:

I haven’t been made aware of that. I’ll speak to Michael (Nicholson) later but in fairness to the club, I know that the club has been reaching out to the agent for quite some time. But where it’s at, I don’t know at this point.

Since Rodgers took over as manager Callum McGregor, Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi, Liel Abada, Stephen Welsh and Tony Ralston have signed extended contracts.

Having lost Jota and Carl Starfelt over the summer and struggled to recruit players of a similar calibre it is clearly important to reward and retain players that have made an impact and brought trophies to the club.

Although Jota’s sale was in unusual circumstances it does demonstrate that even players on long term contracts can be sold when the price is right.
