Michael Dawson hails ‘very good’ Leeds United start v Watford despite ‘disappointment’
Michael Dawson claimed Leeds United were “very, very good” in the opening of their clash against Watford, but points to a missed Georginio Rutter opportunity as a “disappointment”.
Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday (23 September, 15:20), Dawson hailed Daniel Farke’s team as the better of the two sides with only a goal missing from their blistering start.
However, he criticised Rutter’s heavy pass into Daniel James in the box, suggesting its speed killed any chance of Leeds taking the lead.
Dawson said: “The only disappointment from Daniel Farke is the fact that they haven’t taken the lead. They’ve had two big opportunities and they’ve just had another one.
“They get down the left-hand side and Rutter whips his ball in, but there’s just too much pace on it for Dan James coming in.
“Bachman dives in, misses it. But Leeds have been very, very good.”
Close Rutter will be frustrated by his missed opportunity, but Leeds proved to be the dominant force against the Hornets up until this point at Vicarage Road.
A goal would have certainly relaxed the Whites after their quick start, but Watford’s solid defence this season remained resilient.
James would have been disappointed too having not scored yet this season in the Championship, but the Welshman was making himself known to Valérien Ismaël’s defence.
Leeds had the better chances in the clash, with Dawson pointing to two other big chances that the Whites failed to capitalise on in the first half, so frustrations would have been building amongst the Leeds attackers and Farke.
The Whites dominated possession and goal-scoring opportunities in the first half, with Watford struggling to break and create their own chances. While this was clearly the plan Farke came with, he may rue any more missed opportunities.
