Kieran Trippier says 25-year-old Newcastle player was nearly the hero vs Milan

Newcastle United take on Sheffield United tomorrow in the Premier League but lots of talk around the club is still about Tuesday’s Champions League clash with AC Milan as Kieran Trippier says what might have been.

After a 20 year absence from the competition, Newcastle returned to the Champions League taking a hard-earned point from the San Siro as they faced AC Milan.

The Rossoneri dominated the game reducing Newcastle to playing a defensive game and slow build-up play which ultimately came to nothing.

Newcastle captain Kieran Trippier has spoken to The Chronicle about the game and how they could have been returning to Premier League action with three points on the board in the Champions League.

“Yeah, you are going to get moments to win it,” said Trippier. “At this level, you need to be clinical. Take nothing away from Longy it was a good save.

“You put that either side of the keeper it’s 1-0 but you know we need to respect that was a top point away from home in the Champions League. It’s also back-to-back clean sheets now and we move on to the Premier League.”

Trippier is now focused on Sheffield United tomorrow

Trippier seemed desperate to pull the focus back to Sunday’s game against Sheffield United in his chat with The Chronicle as he said repeatedly that they need to focus now on the Premier League.

Sheffield United will prove a big test after an exhausting week. The Premier League newbies are still winless and will be desperate to prove a point against last season’s fourth placed side.

It now remains to be seen just how much Eddie Howe will rotate his squad after their first Champions League foray.
