Eight players were let go by Pompey this summer, and one of them has found a new home.
After leaving Pompey in a summer move, Ryan Tunnicliffe’s search for a new team has finally come to an end.
The Blues released eight players in May, including the 30-year-old. His four-month period without employment is now over.
The midfielder has agreed to terms with Adelaide United, an A-League team getting ready for the 2023–24 season. On Friday, October 20, Adelaide will face Central Coast Mariners to open its campaign.
After playing in England my entire life, I’m beyond thrilled to have signed for United, but it also presents a significant challenge and adjustment for me. Adelaide’s ears, Tunnicliffe said.
‘I’ll be relying on individuals like Zach Clough to help me become acclimated, and I can’t wait to play at Coopers Stadium, which is reportedly one of the top stadiums in the league and on par with England.
This feels like a perfect fit for me, and I can’t wait to get going. “You see more and more of the A-League over in the UK with plenty moving over all the time.”
Tunnicliffe, who spend two seasons at Fratton Park following his free-transfer move from Luton, departed Pompey as he was out of contract and was not part of John Mousinho’s plans going forward.
He was linked with moves to Australia and the MLS last September when Danny Cowley was manager but nothing materialised. Instead, as a result of injuries and unavailability, the former Manchester United youngster found himself back in the fold and playing playing regulalry under Cowley and then Mousinho.
However, with the departures of Jay Mingi, Louis Thompson, and Tunnicliffe, Pompey’s midfield experienced a significant upheaval this summer. Following that, Tino Anjorin, Terry Devlin, Ben Stevenson, and Alex Robertson were all hired.
The manager of Adelaide, Carl Veart, welcomed Ryan Tunnicliffe to his new surroundings and said, “We’re really looking forward to his leadership and grit on the park this season. Ryan has a wealth of experience in the game with a never-say-die mentality.”
He is the ideal player for United because, in our opinion, he will fit the A-League’s physical style and mold well.
His football technical abilities and the professionalism he will offer to the team, as someone who has spent the majority of his career in Championship and Premier League changerooms, can only benefit the entire group.
Tunnicliffe played 69 times for Pompey during his stint on the south coast, contributing 11 goals and three assists. He also played for Fulham, Millwall, Ipswich Town, Peterborough United, Blackburn Rovers, Wigan Athletic, and Barnsley in addition to Manchester United, where he made two appearances.
