Six games into the 2023–24 Championship season, Huddersfield Town and Neil Warnock will part ways.
Football League veteran manager Neil Warnock is to stand down from his post as manager of Huddersfield Town.
The 75-year-old was meant to have managed Huddersfield for the entirety of the 2023/24 season after guiding the Yorkshire club to survival, but they have now chosen to go in a different direction.
Reports of Warnock’s departure surfaced over the weekend, and now the Championship outfit have decided to make the change and act quickly, as they source his successor. It is believed that Huddersfield already have a European appointment lined up, and that they could take charge this week.
Wednesday night’s game between Huddersfield and Stoke City will be overseen by Warnock, who will thereafter leave the John Smith’s Stadium after taking over as manager earlier this year.
When asked why he was leaving the club, Warnock said, “We’ve actually done what we set out to do really.
As CEO Jake stated, the owner Kevin has a three-year strategy to get to the PL. When Dean brought me back, he pleaded with me for days on end before I decided to alter my mind and return to help while I was needed.
“Once they told me they wanted to bring someone in…yes, I thought it would be about Christmas time, but once they told me that I think they had to move on quickly.
“If you’re not wanted, you want to leave right away,” he continued. We always said we’d be honest with one other, and we have been; Ronnie and I wish them the best. I don’t mean that the way it might seem. I advised the guys to make a push for the playoffs right away.
I’ve always told Kevin that I’ll go to his club anytime he wants me to. We’ve made a lot of progress, so I believe it was the right decision for me to return. I don’t think it would have been helpful for anyone to join us during the preseason.
Warnock had led Huddersfield to back-to-back victories, including a victory over one of his old teams, Rotherham United, the weekend before he left. At the time of Warnock’s reported departure, Huddersfield are ranked 17th.
On Tuesday, October 3, Birmingham City and Warnock were scheduled to face off at St Andrews. Prior to the international break, West Brom lost 2-1 against the Terriers at The Hawthorns.
