JUST IN: MANSFILED TOWN IDENTIFIED POTENTIAL CREATIVE PLAYER AND MAY LAND HIM REPORT CLAIMS

Mansfield Town are taking a look at free agent midfielder Liam Loughlan ahead of a potential move to the League Two side, according to Harry Mail from The72.

The 21-year-old, who is available on a free after being let go by League Two rivals Salford City in the summer of 2022, appeared in the Stags’ squad for their Central League Cup game against Notts County on Wednesday, in a team that also included Bailey Cargill and John-Joe O’Toole.

Midfielder Loughlan only went on to make eight first-team appearances for The Ammies, signing for the club following a period in the Leicester City U18’s in which he came up with four goals in 33 appearances in total for the young Foxes, before being released.

During his two-year stay at Salford between 2020 and 2022, the 21-year-old was loaned out to Farsley Celtic, as well as also having a brief spell at Ashton United, in order to get some much-needed game time.

Boss Nigel Clough could resort to taking a look at bringing some free agents in to freshen the squad following a long injury list that has impacted the team so far this campaign, with the likes of Rhys Oates, Alfie Kilgour and Elliott Hewitt all enduring a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Stags have made a brilliant start to the new League Two season, with the club currently sitting third in the table on 13 points, with Nigel Clough’s side, alongside Swindon Town, who are yet to taste a league defeat so far this campaign.

The League Two side mainly focused on strengthening the defence during the transfer window, with the likes of the aforementioned Cargill, alongside Aaron Lewis and experienced centre-half Aden Flint, fresh off the back of promotion to the Championship with Sheffield Wednesday, all making the move to the One Call Stadium.

With the greatest respect, Liam Loughlan is not a name I’m not all familiar with, but what I do know is that Mansfield currently have a long and detailed injury list and could dip into the free agents market to ensure they have enough bodies and that it doesn’t derail their excellent start to the season.

There’s certainly no harm in Nigel Clough taking a look at the 21-year-old midfielder as he looks to earn a contract with the club. Whether or not Mansfield decide to push on and offer him a deal remains to be seen.
