Newcastle United have received a boost ahead of this weekend’s game against Brentford and ahead of their Champions League campaign. Striker Callum Wilson has signed a one-year extension to his current deal. This means he will be staying at St. James’ Park until the end of June 2025. This is a sound piece of business for the Magpies as it gives great experience and cover for the future. Wilson is a reliable source of goals and, despite the incomings over the last two years, has remained a popular choice for manager Eddie Howe.
Top Scorer
The leading scorer for the club in each of the last three seasons, the news will be welcomed by fans of the club as they aim to improve on a difficult start to the season. They have won only one of their first four games, an opening weekend trouncing of Aston Villa. Newcastle are also heading into an important phase of their season as they embark on their Champions League group stage. They face a tough task to qualify out of a group that includes Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, and AC Milan.
Since signing from Bournemouth in 2020, the forward has been consistent with an average of a goal every two games. Now, at 31, Wilson is hitting the peak of his powers and is also very much in England manager Gareth Southgate’s plans for next summer’s European Championships in Germany.
Callum Wilson Signs Extension
After agreeing to the new deal, Wilson told the club’s official website: “I’m delighted to extend my time here. It’s a fantastic football club. I’ve been welcomed ever since I came through the door, and now the club’s going in a fantastic direction and on a journey, so it’s nice to commit my future to being part of that. There are so many fantastic names that have been before me at Newcastle – goalscorers who have worn the number nine – and it’d be nice to join them in the record books during my time here.”
Of course, Eddie Howe knew all too well what Wilson was capable of. The manager had the striker play under him when he was in charge of Bournemouth, so bringing him on board made sense when the chance came.
“He’s an outstanding person, an outstanding footballer, and I’m delighted he will be with us for longer. He’s an incredibly motivated person, and I’ve never seen Callum not motivated to score goals. I think that’s a great thing for a striker.”
