Latest Aston Villa news from Birmingham Live as Villans could return with an offer for Sporting midfielder Pedro Goncalves.
Aston Villa are reportedly still pursuing Sporting Lisbon star Pedro Goncalves.
That’s according to Portuguese outlet O Jogo (via Sport Witness). Although the transfer window closed on September 1, the report claims that hasn’t stopped “approaches” from Premier League sides.
Villa are said to have seen a bid turned down by the Lions during the window. Goncalves’ €80million (£68m) release clause still remains in place despite the midfielder signing a new contract extension until 2027.
But that may not put Villa off when the window reopens in January, however. O Jogo add that Villa remain front runners to reignite their interest in the winter, with enquiries and contacts said to be “ongoing”.
But they are not alone, with fellow Premier League sides in Tottenham, Liverpool and Newcastle United also claimed to be “attentive” to the 25-year-old. Sporting does not rule out the possibility that offers could arrive from England after the festive period.
Speaking about his future after extending his stay with the Lions, Goncalves said: “It’s a feeling of pride. I’m very happy to continue wearing the Lion on my chest.”
Should Villa try to sign Goncalves in January?
