Grimsby Boss Paul Hurst Send A Key Message After Bantams Draw

PAUL Hurst didn’t know whether to laugh or cry after City’s late leveller yesterday.

Grimsby were denied their first win at Valley Parade since March 1997 by a player that boss Hurst has signed twice before.

Alex Gilliead doesn’t score often for the Bantams – and former manager Hurst was ruing his bad luck that it should happen against the Mariners for the second time running.

Gilliead had missed four games with a thigh injury but announced his return from the bench with his first goal since the sides had last met in April.

“He’s a good player and made a difference for them,” admitted Hurst.

“It’s just a shame that he wasn’t still injured for another week. But it was a great strike and he’s scored a couple against us now.

“They hadn’t had many shots at all, but it was a good goal and it was a big improvement from them in the second half.

“It was just a difficult one for us to take with them scoring so late. But, at the same time, there were lots of positives to take from the game, especially in our first-half performance.

“A point at Bradford is a relatively good result. We’ve come here a few times and got nothing, so we will take that.”

Danny Rose had headed Grimsby in front just before half-time and they looked on course to end a wretched record of 19 games without a win over City.

Hurst added: “It was a great ball in from a good area which Danny wants.

“I think he’d probably like more crosses in the box than he gets at times but we want to play a certain way.

“It’s another game unbeaten, which is the sign of a good team.”
