Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe won’t see Joe Willock in action in time for Champions League campaign starting

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has been dealt a fresh injury blow after Joe Willock suffered a new injury in training.

Howe described the situation as a fresh “setback” for Willock who had hoped to return to action after the international break. But that will come too soon for the ex-Arsenal man which means he will miss the start of the club’s Champions League adventure.

Howe is also unsure when he will see Sven Botman again after the ankle injury suffered against Liverpool shows no immediate sign of clearing up.

Speaking after the 3-1 loss to Brighton, Howe was asked about Willock’s comeback date and said: “No unfortunately not. Joe’s had a bit of a setback with an Achilles injury. It’s not related to his hamstring problem so I think he’ll be missing for around six weeks.”

When asked when Dutch star Botman, not even in the squad against the Seagulls, would be back, Howe said: “Unknown.” It leaves Howe with the international break to try to find answers and ensure Newcastle start their Champions League campaign on the back of a Premier League victory against Brentford.

Speaking about the situation generally, Howe said: “That is the reality of what we are dealing with, the expectations go up and the demands go up. It has been disappointing start in terms of results but I cannot fault the effort of the players highlighted by Callum Wilson’s goal at the end we must stick with the positives.”
