Logan O’Connor and Jonathan Drouin both scored and assisted, Martin Necas got two goals, and the streaking The Kings’ four-game winning run came to an end on Thursday night when the Colorado Avalanche defeated them 4-0, their fourth consecutive victory.

The Kings (40-22-9, 89 points), who had won nine of ten games and scored 20 goals during their four-game winning run (including two games where they had seven), struggled to create opportunities against Colorado, despite David Rittich’s 20 saves.
With one game left, the Kings were still two points clear of the Edmonton Oilers for second place in the Pacific Division. On Thursday, Edmonton defeated 6-1 in Seattle.

When the game was still scoreless, both teams had excellent chances. Jeff Malott was alone on Blackwood when he stopped Colorado’s clearing effort in the right circle with 7:50 remaining in the first period, but the goalie made the save.
Rittich saved Valerie Nichushkin’s wrister early in the second period, preventing the Avalanche from scoring the opening goal after a deflection traveled to the front of the net.
Then Colorado broke the stalemate with two fast goals. At 5:25, O’Connor flicked a floater over Rittich’s left shoulder and in after Makar stickhandled down the left side and slipped a pass into the slot. This was O’Connor’s first goal.
Samuel Girard’s attempt from the point went behind the net 92 seconds later. At 6:57, Necas grabbed it and hammered it against the post to take a 2-0 lead.
