This Week, the SEC Announces Tennessee
Ahead of March Madness, the SEC gave the Tennessee Volunteers some positive news. A number of Tennessee men’s basketball players were honored by the SEC as the Vols got ready for the tournament. All of this occurs prior to March Madness, as Tennessee is predicted to be a No. 2 seed in the East Region by ESPN’s Joe Lunardi’s most recent bracketology. In the first round, the Vols are predicted to play the No. 15 seeded Robert Morris Colonials. After succeeding in a demanding SEC season, Tennessee is determined to show that it can be a serious title contender. This season, Zakai Zeigler has played a significant role in the Vols’ success. Zeigler was selected the SEC’s Defensive Player of the Year, the conference announced on Monday. The SEC gave the Vols players this accolade, among others.
Additionally, Ziegler was selected to the SEC All-Defensive Team and All-SEC First Team. These accolades round out Zeigler’s impressive resume, which already includes three All-SEC selections, four SEC All-Defense Team selections, and his second Defensive Player of the Year award.
Zeigler made 30 starts this season and averaged a career-high 13.1 points, 7.5 assists, 3 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game. He also shot 31.9% from beyond the 3-point line. Chaz Lanier, a guard for the Vols, was also awarded the SEC’s Newcomer of the Year. When the committee releases the official NCAA Tournament bracket on Selection Sunday, March 16, Tennessee will learn their March Madness matchup.
