Huddersfield Town ‘Fantastic’ Player heads back out on League One loan

The centre-forward has completed a season-long loan move to Shrewsbury Town, where he will get more experience of League One football following his success at Morecambe last year

Huddersfield-born Terriers striker Kieran Phillips has completed a season-long loan move to League One side Shrewsbury Town, the two clubs have confirmed

The 23-year-old centre-forward spent the first half of last season out on loan with Morecambe, where he racked up seven goals and two assists in 20 third-tier appearances despite the club’s ultimately unsuccessful struggles against relegation.

A serious hamstring injury in January meant Phillips’ season was cut short and he returned to Huddersfield Town in January, but fears of a recurrence last week were put to rest and he was able to return to action for the B team as quickly as Tuesday afternoon.

Sporting director Mark Cartwright said in a club statement announcing his move to Shrewsbury: “There were quite a few clubs interested in taking Kieran, which is no surprise given how he has performed in his previous loans in League One and League Two.

“We all know Kieran has real talent and this move to Shrewsbury is the perfect opportunity for him to take the next step in his career. We all wish him the best of luck there, and we’ll monitor his progress closely.”

Manager Neil Warnock added: “Kieran is desperate to play football. Ideally I wanted to see more of him for myself before he went out on loan, but he went and picked an injury and he’s not been able to show me what he can do really.

“With the end of the transfer window coming so quickly, it’s better for him to go out on loan and get some games under his belt.”
