According to ESPN NYG beat reporter Jordan Raanan on February 26, it appears like the New York Giants’ “top priority” at quarterback is negotiating a trade for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. This perception is building during the NFL Combine.
As the day wore on, additional people, including as Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News and Dianna Russini, the chief NFL insider for The Athletic, validated Raanan’s suspicions about the Giants’ interest in Stafford. As a result, NorthJersey.com outperformed author Art Stapleton in making a daring social media forecast.
Stapleton stated on X, “I am fairly certain of the following two scenarios.” “[One,] the Giants will continue their aggressive pursuit of a deal for Matthew Stafford. [And two,] I think the Giants will trade up to No. 1 with the [Tennessee] Titans for their quarterback if they don’t acquire Stafford before the April 24 NFL Draft.
Stapleton said that the cost of such a deal may be “less than some may expect” if the Titans want to fall back but still finish in the top three in order to have a chance at cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter or edge rusher Abdul Carter.
The two speculated that this “lower” price may be between two third round picks (plus the No. 3 selection) and a second rounder and a third round pick (plus the No. 3 pick), with assistance from Dane Brugler, lead draft analyst for The Athletic, who talked to Stapleton earlier this week. However, neither expected to have to pay an additional first-round pick to move up to No. 1.
Cam Ward vs. Shedeur Sanders at No. 1: The Giants are still thought to be undecided. In general
Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders would be the Giants’ options if they were to move up to the No. 1 overall pick. Big Blue is still in the early stages of deciding which prospect they prefer in that situation, according to Stapleton and Giants general manager Joe Schoen (more on that below).
On February 26, Stapleton wrote, “Here’s the thing with the Giants and Cam Ward,” since there is an entirely unknown component to this equation: Team brass has yet to have a private meeting with him. Ward has been exercising elsewhere; he hasn’t been at Senior Bowl or the Shrine Bowl.
