The Griffin Canning incident that plagued the Angels will be welcomed by NY Mets supporters.
Angels supporters are fully aware of what is ahead for the Mets supporters when former Angel Griffin passes away in New York.
For years, Griffin Canning plagued Angels supporters. Early on, the former top prospect shown promise, but while in Anaheim, he was never able to maintain his health and realize his full potential. The Angels discovered they hadn’t been missing much when he finally spent a whole season on the mound last year.
With a miserable 5.19 ERA in 171.2 innings pitched in 2024, Canning topped the American League in earned runs allowed. His ability to spin and see the ball go over the outfield wall improved, allowing an incredible 1.63 HR/9. Additionally, his strikeout rate fell from 9.85 K/9 in 2023 to a pitiful 6.82 K/9 in the previous season.
The Angels made a smart decision to trade Canning to the Atlanta Braves for Jorge Soler, which may have been Perry Minasian’s finest offseason move (at least in terms of value), even though he still had one more year of team control.
Canning was promptly DFA’d by Atlanta. They just wanted to terminate Soler’s contract; he wasn’t part of their strategy. At that moment, Canning was somewhat unexpectedly signed to a $4.25 million, one-year contract with the New York Mets.
The Mets, a team with World Series hopes after signing Juan Soto to the biggest contract in history, rebuilt their whole rotation this winter, and Canning was expected to be a depth starter. When Opening Day rolled around, they didn’t actually have any plans to can, but that could have changed today.
The Mets will soon learn what it’s like to pass the ball to Griffin Canning every sixth day.
The Mets’ starting rotation took two serious hits right before spring training started. First, Frankie Montas, a recently acquired starter, suffered a lat strain that will prevent him from playing for the first few months of the season. Shortly later, Sean Manaea, their ace, had an oblique strain.
The Mets have additional doubts about their rotation, which might lead to Canning being a staple even if Manaea should return somewhat soon. Clay Holmes, a former Yankees reliever, is another of their new starters. They are trying to get him into the rotation, something he hasn’t done since making four starts in 2018.
Additionally, Kodai Senga, their second top-of-the-rotation arm, preferred to pitch on a six-day schedule and missed all but five innings of the previous regular season.
All of that means the Mets will have plenty of opportunities to see Griffin Canning, even when Manaea and Montas return. While Mets supporters will soon have to learn the hard way about the sorrow of relying on Canning to be a dependable component of a starting rotation, Angels fans should offer their condolences. Canning is ready for a more significant position.
