Update on injuries for the New York Rangers: Four key players, including the star, will be sidelined.
Igor Shesterkin was not on the rink Tuesday as the New York Rangers reassembled on the ice for the first time in over a week. Due to an upper-body injury he acquired prior to the 4 Nations Face-Off break, the 29-year-old goaltender is still out.
According to reports, Shesterkin is skating alone and hasn’t yet joined his teammates for practice. Goalie Dylan Garand and veteran Jonathan Quick participated in practice after being brought up from the American Hockey League’s Hartford.
Regarding Shesterkin, Rangers coach Peter Laviolette only said, “He’s still day to day.”
In a 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on February 7, the Rangers’ top goalkeeper sustained an injury. The next night, when Quick backstopped an incredible 4-3 comeback victory in New York’s last game before the break, he did not accompany the Rangers to Columbus.
Given the two-week hiatus for the first-ever 4 Nations Face-Off competition, it was announced prior to that game that Shesterkin will miss 1-2 weeks due to an upper-body ailment.
Shesterkin seems to have injured his hand or wrist during the second period against Pittsburgh, however the ailment is not yet known. Shesterkin removed his blocker and seemed to be in discomfort when he scurried by his net and became entangled with another player’s stick. The Rangers trainer checked him out, but he stayed in and played the entire game.
