DONE DEAL: A second former dominant close for the Rays signs a conditional minor league contract with the Cardinals
Anderson has struggled with every team he has played for, despite having incredible stats with the Rays. Regardless of whether this is a coincidence or a direct result of the Rays system, the Cardinals will give him a chance because of his prior success.
There is also a fascinating history behind the hard-throwing right-hander. Before entering Major League Baseball, Anderson was on a very troubling trajectory. He made some bad choices and ended up being jailed for second-degree assault after using a baseball bat to strike someone over the head in a pub. The fact that he overcame this seemingly impossible circumstance is astounding.
The Mayville State alumnus, however, made the decision to change his course in life and pursue his goal of playing in the major leagues. Anderson managed to play for the Frontier League, an independent league, and excelled as a strong pitcher.
The reliever didn’t make his major league debut until he was traded to the Marlins in 2018, although the Twins, who are from his home state of Minnesota, were the first team to give him a shot. In Miami, the right-hander had mediocre results, but he rose to fame after being acquired by the Rays in a transaction that also featured Ryne Stanek.
