Helman, 28, has played his whole career in Minneapolis after being selected by the Minnesota Twins in the eleventh round of the 2018 draft out of Texas A&M University. In 2024, he made his only 10 major league plate appearances, with three strikeouts and two doubles. The career of the right-handed hitter
Although Helman can play wherever on the diamond, he has spent the majority of his innings at third base and in the outfield. Though they are not his strong points, he can also play shortstop and second base. He is capable of playing all three outfield positions.
Nolan Arenado’s trade market is essentially nonexistent, which has caused the Cardinals’ offseason preparations to stagnate. John Mozeliak has been unable to advance in discussions despite having an agreement with the Houston Astros that would have moved the eight-time All-Star to Houston.
Given his inexperience, Helman will probably start toward the bottom of the Cardinals’ depth chart, but he may be the right-handed outfielder John Mozeliak has been looking for this winter.
To put it mildly, the Cardinals’ offseason has been disappointing. The only roster-related transactions they have done have been minor league ones, and they were the last team to execute a trade or sign a free agent that affected their big league roster. The supporters’ optimism won’t be much impacted by this transaction.

Fans could be surprised by Michael Helman, but he’ll most likely end up as the 26th guy. As pitchers and catchers are about to report for spring training, maybe John Mozeliak has more in store.
