It is predicted that the New York Mets will steal a star free agent worth $80 million from the rival Dodgers.
The New York Mets are said to have been eliminated as the Roki Sasaki sweepstakes is shrunk to three teams. New York will thus have to focus on obtaining a new starting pitcher to put at the top of their rotation. Recently, FanSided’s James Nolan projected that the Mets will sign Jack Flaherty, a free agent from the Los Angeles Dodgers. According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman,
Flaherty would sign for $80 million, but his actual contract may be worth more than nine figures. “Jack Flaherty is well-known to the Mets. In the 2024 NLCS, he faced them twice,” Nolan wrote. “He pitched seven innings and gave up only two hits in his first outing against the Mets this past postseason. He assisted the Los Angeles Dodgers in defeating the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the 2024 World Series.
Although Flaherty’s market hasn’t grown as much as he would have liked, he was projected to be among the most sought-after pitchers in the winter free agency market. According to a recent report by MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal, the 29-year-old is looking for a short-term contract with a higher AAV.
That could be exactly what the Mets are looking for.In 2024, Flaherty was a rising star. If he hadn’t been paired with Tarik Skubal in Detroit, he would have been the ace. The righty was the Dodgers’ finest pitcher in the closing innings. He’s the starter the Mets should target if they can sign him without going over budget. However, New York can try to make a deal for a pitcher who is less expensive if his price tag grows too high.
