The Tennessee Vols formally declared that star running back Trey Cooley has committed to a five-year contract with them, surpassing both Alabama and the Florida Gators.
Even though the Tennessee Vols football team has had some bad news this week, nothing was more or less shocking than running back Dylan Sampson’s announcement that he won’t be returning in 2025. The NFL Draft is calling his name, but it was hoped he would return for one last season.
Consequently, the Vols offense will be left with a huge gap. The output that UT’s SEC Player of the Year delivered will be hard to replicate. Could Josh Heupel and his coaches pursue someone in the portal, even if Knoxville has young potential for the role?
We believe so, and we have our sights set on one player in particular. Tawee Walker, a transfer from Wisconsin, recently finished his one and only season in Madison. Could Heupel and company come calling now that Walker was back in the portal?
Tawee Walker, a transfer running back from Wisconsin, should be pursued by Tennessee.
Walker played two years in Norman after signing with Oklahoma in 2022 after excelling in the JUCO levels. After that, he traveled to Wisconsin, where he occasionally shown exceptional skill with the ball this past fall. The 5-9, 218-pound player ran for 864 yards and 10 touchdowns throughout the season.
Walker didn’t have much success against winning teams in ’24 because the Wisconsin offensive line wasn’t very reliable. But given that the organization signed Wendell Moe Jr. from the gateway and that other important returners are on their way back, we believe that things could work out lot better for him in Knoxville.
With one more year of eligibility left, Walker will want to join a contender, but he is undoubtedly getting a lot of interest now that he is in the portal. Tennessee has an opening at the RB1 position and has qualified for the CFP for the first time in program history. Walker would benefit from moving to Tennessee if he wants to play for a prestigious university and possibly improve his draft prospects.
