After the Houston Astros traded Kyle Tucker and let Alex Bregman to walk away, a top MLB source mocks the team.
The Houston Astros’ offseason has changed the course of the team.
The Chicago Cubs acquired three-time All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Astros last week in exchange for third baseman Isaac Paredes and two highly regarded prospects: pitcher Cam Smith, a 2024 first-round choice, and
Today, they reportedly agreed to a three-year, $60 million contract with Christian Walker, the first baseman. Over the past three seasons, Walker, a 10-year veteran, has emerged as one of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ top all-around first basemen, taking home three Gold Gloves in a row. Along with hitting 95 home runs over that time, he has an OPS of.812 and an OPS+ of 123, which puts him 23% above the league-average hitter.
Walker’s signing follows José Abreu’s 2024 release by the Astros, who saw him play just 176 games in less than two seasons. After a terrible three-year, $58.6 million contract, Houston cut Abreu, a former American League MVP, less than halfway through.
After nine seasons, Alex Bregman’s time in Houston is over with the addition of Walker and Paredes. With the Astros, the homegrown player won two World Series and was named an All-Star twice.
Without Bregman and Tucker in their lineup, the Astros will look very different in 2025, but they will still be among the best in the AL West and will try to qualify for the playoffs for the ninth straight year.
Will the Astros, however, improve upon their 2024 squad the following season? One of the best MLB insiders doesn’t think so.
Wesneski, Hayden.
