Currently, the Buccaneers have $11,472,129 in cap space, according to OverTheCap.com. Josh Queipo from Pewter Report has analyzed the figures and noted that if Tampa Bay trades for Davante Adams next week, the cap hit for the rest of the season would be $12,558,333. This would require a minor restructuring, which assistant general manager and cap expert Mike Greenberg can facilitate.
Queipo highlights that Adams’ current performance, adjusted for age, is valued at $25 million. Considering the surplus value of acquiring him for about $12.5 million for the remainder of the season, this amounts to a total surplus of $37.5 million, roughly equivalent to the 43rd overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Thus, the Buccaneers would likely need to trade their 2025 second-round pick along with another late-round pick, since their second-round selection would be later than No. 43 if the season ended today. This would be a significant cost for acquiring Adams, who will turn 32 on Christmas Eve. Bucs general manager Jason Licht typically avoids trading away picks due to the team’s successful draft history, and he wouldn’t likely want to rent a player for just half a season. This suggests that the Bucs would need to extend Adams’ contract, which might mean parting ways with 28-year-old Chris Godwin after the season.
If there is strong interest in Adams, the price could escalate to a late first-round pick from a team eager to compete now, like the Aaron Rodgers-led Jets. While the Bucs might consider this option, it’s not very likely to happen.
