Alan Shearer has hailed Phil Foden for his performance in Manchester City’s Premier League win over Newcastle United.
After winning the Super Cup by beating Sevilla on penalties just a few days prior to Saturday’s clash against the Magpies, the Manchester club made it two league wins out of two with a 1-0 victory over Eddie Howe’s side.
Shearer praises Foden after Newcastle victory
Looking back on this latest match, one City player, who ended up playing a big role in the game, found himself on the end of some significant praise from one former Premier League star.
Following the recent round of fixtures, Shearer had this to say about Foden after he included the City star in his latest Premier League Team of the Week.
He said: “Excelled in a No 10 role, creating chances at will.”
In addition to providing the assist for Julian Alvarez’s winning goal, Foden made seven key passes in total across the 90 minutes, more than any other player on the day.
This shows just how effective he was in terms of creating chances and why Shearer praised him for doing so.
As well as making an impressive amount of key passes, the 23-year-old also managed to successfully complete all three dribbles he attempted as well as winning seven of the nine ground duels he was involved in, showing how much of an impact he had on the game in and out of possession.
This performance ultimately earned Foden an overall match rating of 8.9/10 from SofaScore, making him the highest-rated player on the day.
Taking all of that into account, it’s clear that the Englishman showed how capable he is of playing in a midfield role as Shearer mentioned and was very deserving of the praise the former Newcastle star gave him.
