After clinching gold at the Paris Olympics, NBA star Stephen Curry shared his thoughts on the Warriors as they head into the 2024-25 season. Despite popular opinion, Curry is confident that his team can still compete with the top teams in the Western Conference.
“I really enjoy the fact that people doubt our ability to keep up with some of the other top teams in the West,” Curry told Natasha Dye of People. “I thrive on that challenge of entering training camp with the goal of creating our own success. This Olympic experience has given me a boost, and I’m aiming to channel that energy throughout the season.”
A few years back, Stephen Curry and the Warriors had the entire league on notice. From 2015 to 2019, they achieved historic dominance, securing three championships in five consecutive Finals appearances. They added another title in 2022, reaffirming their status at the top of the NBA.
Stephen Curry, over his 15-year career, has established himself as one of the greatest point guards in history, with two MVP awards, two scoring titles, and impressive career averages of 24.8 points, 6.4 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game on 47.3% shooting.
At 36, Curry remains remarkably effective and is heading into the new season with championship aspirations. However, the Warriors face challenges as they are not in the strongest position right now. Last season, despite having Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, they finished 10th in the Western Conference and were unable to advance past the play-in tournament after a loss to the Kings. Adding to their troubles, Klay Thompson departed to join the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50 million deal.
To address Thompson’s departure, GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. signed Buddy Hield and Kyle Anderson to bolster the team’s depth and versatility, though it’s uncertain how effective these new additions will be.
Despite these moves, the Warriors are viewed as underdogs heading into the next season. With two of their core stars nearing 40 and key role players like Andrew Wiggins and Jonathan Kuminga still needing to prove their reliability in crucial moments, there are significant concerns. The rising competition in the West, including strong teams like the Mavericks, Timberwolves, and Thunder, further complicates their path.
Ultimately, the Warriors’ success will largely depend on Stephen Curry’s ability to continue his high level of play and possibly elevate it even further. If he can maintain his excellence and inspire his team, the Warriors might still make an impact in the conference.
Currently, many see the Warriors as a dynasty in decline, and to regain the trust of fans and prove their competitiveness, they will need to rekindle the magic that once defined them and demonstrate they can still compete with the league’s best.
