Former Celtics guard Rajon Rondo admitted guilt to a gun-related charge on Tuesday, following his arrest in Indiana earlier this year. The retired point guard was sentenced to six months of probation, with his jail time suspended as part of the plea deal, according to WLKY in Indiana.
Rondo’s arrest occurred on January 28 after a traffic stop, leading to charges of marijuana and gun possession following a search. Although he was scheduled for trial last month, he negotiated a plea agreement beforehand. Under the agreement, the marijuana charges were dropped, but he pleaded guilty to unlawfully carrying a handgun.
Court records reveal that Rondo paid $189 in court fees and had his six-month jail sentence suspended. Instead, he will serve six months of probation.
Rondo had a notable career with the Celtics, playing over eight seasons before being traded to the Mavericks in 2014 for Jae Crowder, Brandan Wright, Jameer Nelson, and several draft picks. The 37-year-old won two NBA titles, including one with Boston in 2008, and last played with the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2021-22 season. He was also invited to join the Celtics for training camp in October 2023 to reconnect with the team.
In addition to Tuesday’s plea, Rondo has faced several legal issues, including two emergency protective orders in 2022 and 2023 from the same individual. He completed anger management classes, counseling, and a mental health evaluation before the first order was dismissed in 2022. The second case concluded with an agreed order.
