Lee Nicholls makes encouraging Huddersfield Town claim amid transfer point
The goalkeeper made no bones about the performance on the opening day at Plymouth Argyle not being good enough but feels the side have shown they are now going in the right direction
Terriers goalkeeper Lee Nicholls have revealed that a few home truths were shared among the squad after the opening day defeat to Plymouth, but now feels the side are moving in the right direction after a pair of more convincing performances against Leicester City and Middlesbrough.
Huddersfield Town are still looking for their first win of the season after conceding the only goal of the game to Leicester at the John Smith’s Stadium – a Stephy Mavididi effort that Nicholls acknowledges he should have saved – and drawing 1-1 at the Riverside Stadium.
But Town came away from both games justifiably feeling they were not far away from adding to the single point they have actually taken, with just little bit of extra sharpness in the opposition half required on both occasions.
Neil Warnock has acknowledged he would ideally like another midfielder and another attacking player in the squad, and Nicholls echoed his manager as his stated his belief that those signings could make a decisive difference.
“But Plymouth, I think everyone knows that wasn’t good enough and we’ve really worked hard in the past two weeks to get to where we want to be. Hopefully [Middlesbrough] is a performance where we can kick on and sort of build on.”
He added: “One thing about this team is that we know what type of team we’re going to have to be. Hopefully we’ll get a few more additions and we can sort of add to what we’ve got, but at the minute we need to be that type of team that has just never given up.
“I think people who have seen me over the past two years will know I’m not one to give up and I’m always going be there pushing the lads. We’ve people like that all the squad: you look at Matty [Pearson], you look at [Michal] Helik, you look at Hoggy [Jonathan Hogg, just at the back as an example. We had a few words with each other about the Plymouth game and it’s been better since then.”
