What can we expect from the Virginia Tech Hokies in 2024? Although some forecasts place them fifth or sixth in the ACC, several Hokies are already receiving preseason accolades.
ESPN’s recent list of the top 100 college football players for 2024 includes two Virginia Tech defenders. Defensive end Antwaun Powell-Ryland is ranked at No. 63. After transferring from Florida last season, Powell-Ryland had an impressive debut with the Hokies, recording 40 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss (fifth in the ACC), and 9.5 sacks (second in the ACC). He had multiple sacks in four games and aims for greater consistency in 2024. With a strong defensive line expected this year, Powell-Ryland might have more chances to boost his sack count.
Senior cornerback Dorian Strong is listed at No. 88. Known for their “DBU” reputation, Virginia Tech has not had a standout cornerback for a while, but Strong is set to change that. Last season, Strong was exceptional, with opponents completing only 25% of passes thrown his way, allowing just 2.8 yards per target (third in FBS) and 0.29 yards per coverage snap. His decision to return for another season was a significant boost for the Hokies.
With many key players coming back in 2024, including quarterback Kyron Drones, running back Bhayshul Tuten, and wide receiver Dae’Quan Felton, who all contributed to a revamped offense in the latter part of last season, the Hokies have the potential for a standout year.
