FSV Mainz midfielder Nadiem Amiri has disclosed that he declined an offer from Leeds United last summer due to personal family reasons. Speaking to Watson in Germany, he clarified the events surrounding the summer transfer window and refuted false media narratives that emerged afterward.
Amiri, who joined Mainz in January from Bayer Leverkusen in a €1m deal, explained that he had fallen out of favor at Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso, prompting his move. The midfielder had come close to leaving the previous summer for similar reasons, with Leeds making a concerted effort to secure his signature as they underwent a rebuild under Daniel Farke.
Numerous reports highlighted Farke’s admiration for the 27-year-old, suggesting a potential transfer to Elland Road was imminent when Amiri visited England to meet with the club. However, the deal ultimately collapsed, and Amiri returned to Germany, remaining with Leverkusen until January.
Despite subsequent reports attempting to clarify the situation, Amiri found himself unfairly portrayed in the media as a mercenary. He aimed to set the record straight, emphasizing that family considerations were the primary factor behind his decision not to join Leeds.
Amiri acknowledged Leeds’ strong interest and generous offer but expressed his inability to envision the move, particularly due to family concerns. He clarified that despite his visit to Leeds, no agreement had been reached, contrary to some reports. He lamented the media misrepresentation and the subsequent perception of him as the antagonist in the situation, highlighting the complexity of behind-the-scenes dynamics in football and the need for empathy toward players as individuals rather than commodities in the business of football.
