The San Diego Padres have added a versatile player to their ranks, signing Brad Miller to a minor league deal, as reported by AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. Miller, represented by ISE Baseball, has also secured an invitation to the big league camp.
At 34, Miller has faced setbacks in recent seasons with the Texas Rangers due to injuries, including strains to his oblique and hamstring. Limited to just 27 games last year, he posted a batting line of.214/.328/.339. Similarly, in 2022, he struggled with injuries, playing 81 games and hitting.212,.270,.320.
However, Miller’s prior performances paint a different picture. Before his time with the Rangers, he enjoyed a strong three-year stint across multiple teams, hitting 40 home runs and boasting a combined slash line of.236/.331/.480 from 2019 to 2021. Despite his defensive versatility, primarily suited to the four corner spots, he could still find a niche with the Padres.
With uncertainty in the Padres’ outfield and potential bench roles up for grabs, Miller’s left-handed bat and favorable splits against right-handed pitchers provide intriguing possibilities. Manager Mike Shildt may utilize him strategically, especially considering the right-handed, heavy options currently on the roster.
Although Miller faces the challenge of proving himself after injury-marred seasons, his potential impact could be significant, offering depth and versatility to the Padres’ lineup.
