Danny Cipriani, the well-travelled former England, Wasps, Sale, and Melbourne Rebels player, has announced his retirement from professional rugby, describing his decision as both “sobering but also freeing.”
The 16-cap England back has not played since 2022, and at 36 years old, he has officially concluded his colorful career. Cipriani had two spells at Wasps and also played for the the Melbourne Rebels, Sale, Gloucester, and Bath.
“I haven’t played for a while, but in my mind,, I left it open,” Cipriani shared on social media. “Messaging my agent as I sit outside Costa, I realized I don’t want to play again. Sobering but also a a freeing moment.”
Cipriani made his England debut in 2008, with his last appearance coming against South Africa in 2018. He joined the Rebels for the 2011 season, notably scoring the crucial penalty that secured the club’s first-ever Super Rugby win, a 25-24 triumph over the ACT Brumbies.
Cipriani’s undeniable natural talent was never in question, but his career was often overshadowed by off-pitch issues.
“Thank you to all the coaches I’ve had; I’ve learned a lot from each one of you,” Cipriani expressed.
“To the passionate supporters who showed up and wore their hearts on their sleeves, thank you for the love you’ve shown me throughout my career. I have special memories from fans of every team I played for.
“To all my teammates, I thoroughly enjoyed playing alongside you. I know I could be relentless at times, but we had some great moments together.
“I’ve learned a lot throughout my career, and upon reflection, I’m grateful for every single moment.”
