Sheffield United agree deals for Everton and Nottingham Forest defenders in double deadline day swoop

Sheffield United have finalized loan agreements for two defenders, Mason Holgate from Everton and Joe Worrall from Nottingham Forest. Chris Wilder, the manager, has been eager to strengthen the team’s defense, especially given their current position at the bottom of the Premier League standings. With Sheffield United having conceded the highest number of goals (54) in the league this season, Wilder is optimistic that the addition of Holgate or Worrall will contribute to improving the team’s defensive performance.

According to exclusive information from TEAMtalk, German club Stuttgart had been actively pursuing the signing of Mason Holgate, but it appears they have missed out on securing his signature. Leeds has also shown interest in the defender.

Holgate began the season on loan at Southampton but struggled to secure a regular spot in their starting lineup, featuring in only seven matches for the Saints. Everton has agreed to terminate Holgate’s loan with Southampton, paving the way for his move to Sheffield United, which is expected to be finalized later today.

Initially hesitant to allow Holgate to join the Blades, as they didn’t want to strengthen a relegation rival, Everton eventually relented, offering the most favorable terms. Holgate is optimistic that this move to Bramall Lane will provide an opportunity to revive his once-promising career.

Sheff Utd owner confirms appointment of 'best' option Chris Wilder; makes January transfer hintAccording to sources from TEAMtalk, Sheffield United is now faced with the decision of choosing between Mason Holgate and Joe Worrall. The club has reportedly reached an agreement to sign Worrall on loan from Nottingham Forest.

Worrall, who has seen limited action at the City Ground with just five Premier League starts this season, has fallen down the pecking order. Nuno Espirito Santo, the manager of Nottingham Forest, is willing to approve Worrall’s loan move, providing Sheffield United with another potential defensive option.

As previously reported, Leeds had shown interest in the 27-year-old, but Sheffield United now have the opportunity to secure his services.

Despite having a loan offer for Joe Worrall rejected earlier in the transfer window, Sheffield United’s persistence seems to have paid off. It is understood that Worrall is set to undergo his medical with the Blades this afternoon, with only final contract details remaining to be agreed upon.

However, it’s important to note that Sheffield United can only sign either Worrall or Holgate, not both. This limitation stems from Premier League rules, which allow clubs to bring in only two domestic loans. Earlier in the season, Sheffield United secured the loan signing of James McAtee from Manchester City.
