A scan indicates that a Newcastle United midfielder will be out for “six weeks,” and the £32 million pair is expected to return to Aston Villa. As Eddie Howe’s team gets ready to play Fulham again the following weekend, they have mixed news.
Elliot Anderson, a 21-year-old midfielder for Newcastle United, is expected to miss an additional six weeks of action, making his total absences five months.
Since the 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace over four months ago, Anderson has not been seen in action due to a stress fracture in his back that occurred in October.
“The next day [after Crystal Palace], he woke up with a sore back and it didn’t really go away so he’s had scans and tests and it looks like eight weeks,” Magpies head coach Eddie Howe said to The Gazette at the time.
However, after receiving multiple back exams, Anderson’s recuperation has lasted far longer than eight weeks. Despite favorable results from his most recent scan, the young player is still not back to full training with the first team. According to Mail Sport, he will likely require ‘about six weeks’ before he is back in contention.
With Joelinton undergoing thigh surgery that will finish his season early and Anderson out until March, Howe will be aiming to improve his team in any way possible over the next few weeks. Thankfully, a few players will soon be able to play again.
Jacob Murphy has resumed his training and could play in Newcastle’s FA Cup fourth round encounter against Fulham on Saturday at 7 p.m. In November, the winger underwent surgery for a dislocated shoulder.
For the Aston Villa game on January 30, Howe anticipates that Murphy and striker Callum Wilson will be returned from calf injuries, while Joe Willock and Harvey Barnes should be back in a few weeks following extended absences.
