The timing of Birmingham City’s decision to fire Wayne Rooney has drawn criticism from the team’s owners.
They expected too much of Rooney, he feels, claiming that ‘nobody’ can succeed in the short period allotted to him, much less someone with the 38-year-old’s lack of managerial experience. He also feels that they’may have made a better fist of competing’ had they decided to retain John Eustace, and that it was a bad idea to appoint Rooney in the first place.
It’s safe to say that Rooney’s tenure as Birmingham’s manager did not go as expected. During his tenure, the legendary Manchester United player managed to win just two games, tie four, and lose nine. He led the Blues for a little more than two months in total.
What was Don Goodman’s statement on Wayne Rooney’s dismissal?
Goodman commented [via Goal] on the move to fire Rooney, saying, “The Birmingham board got their timing all wrong.” Sunderland, Ipswich, Southampton, Hull, and Middlesbrough. They might have done a better job of competing in those games even with John Eustace, but I doubt they would have prevailed. Therefore, I believe that the timing was completely off, which puts Wayne Rooney on the defensive right away. He’s always in the spotlight, and everyone wants him to fail because he’s Wayne Rooney.
“Wayne Rooney is correct—nobody can construct something in 87 days, therefore the leadership must have been doubting themselves. In order to “build something,” I mean to gather a group of players who are accustomed to playing a specific method, tear it down, and start over. Few people possess the ability to do that. not to mention someone who is still in the early stages of his coaching career.”
