Former UNLV quarterback switches commitment from Georgia to USC…

The former UNLV quarterback flipped his commitment from the Bulldogs to the Trojans late Tuesday night.

Jayden Maiava has changed his plans just one day after committing to Georgia.

The former UNLV quarterback switched his commitment from the Bulldogs to USC late Tuesday night. The decision to attend USC came just one day after the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Maiava committed to the Bulldogs.

Instead, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Maiava will transfer to Los Angeles, where he will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Maiava performed admirably as the Rebels’ primary quarterback during his redshirt freshman season. In 14 games, Maiava completed 63.5% of his passes for 3,085 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He also ran for 277 yards and three touchdowns.

Maiava will be joining an SEC program, but he is no stranger to competition from the conference. Maiava led UNLV to an upset victory over Vanderbilt on September 16, completing 19 of 33 passes for 261 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

What the numbers say on new USC QB Jayden Maiava

Maiava debated if she should stay at UNLV. He eventually accessed the transfer portal on January 1.

Maiava redshirted his true freshman season in 2022 after signing with the Rebels as a three-star recruit from Liberty High School in Henderson, Nevada. He led the Patriots to the 2021 state championship game, passing for 2,027 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Maiava’s decision leaves Georgia with three scholarship quarterbacks in 2024: senior Carson Beck, redshirt sophomore Gunner Stockton, and true freshman Ryan Puglisi. Kirby Smart said on National Signing Day that the Bulldogs would have four scholarship quarterbacks for the upcoming season.

“That’s something we have to think long and hard about,” Smart said when asked about bringing in another quarterback. “Our hard number is four.” We want to be at four, but we’re not there. So, once again, we’ll consider our alternatives and see what we can do there. We would want to be at four, but that is our aim.”

Maiava is the Bulldogs’ latest swing and miss in their pursuit of four scholarship quarterbacks. Georgia attempted to flip Florida State recruit Luke Kromenhoek immediately after Dylan Raiola switched his commitment from Georgia to Nebraska, but the four-star Kromenhoek remained committed to the Seminoles and signed.
