Adrian Goldberg thinks that regardless of the takeover scenario, West Brom needs to improve their fan base if they are to develop as a team.
On December 12, The Telegraph revealed that Guochuan Lai was in advanced negotiations with several parties regarding a £60 million takeover at The Hawthorns.
However, former BBC broadcaster Goldberg has noted that West Brom’s issues won’t necessarily be fixed even if new owners take over.
“We take it for granted as fans. However, for these young athletes, actually beginning a #wba game is a huge life milestone.Chrislepkowski, @GoldbergRadio, and the Baggies’ up-and-coming talent
He stated on The Liquidator podcast [8 January, 19 minutes and 54 seconds] that “there were one or two reports before Christmas suggesting news would be imminent, but nothing came to materialize.”
“An significant development that Action for Albion has also noted is that the days of a club’s owner walking in, throwing down a bunch of cash, and taking a big gamble on signing new players are drawing to an end.
“This isn’t a league policy yet, but it will happen eventually. The following season, 2025–2026, will see the introduction of wage discipline in the Championship, limiting your pay and transfer expenditures to 70% of your gate or merchandise revenue.
“At the moment, you can lose £13 million a season, or £39 million over three seasons, but that measurement system will change.
You can only spend 70% of the money that comes in, therefore the more people that come through the gate, the more they pay, the more food and drink they drink, and the more shirts they buy, the more money that goes into your pot of money.
“Looking to grow the club’s fan base is the only way Albion will grow in the long run, despite the challenges involved.”
“You have twenty thousand people telling you that it’s impossible, you can’t do it, but if we don’t do that, we won’t get anywhere.” We are not going to get out of this predicament.
On the surface, the new regulations that the EFL is implementing make perfect sense. They serve as an efficient tool of preventing clubs from overspending.
Super-rich owners are great and all, but the team will be in serious danger if that source of funding suddenly disappears.
Albion could use several million dollars poured into the team to pay off mounting debts and bolster a roster that will be much weakened come summer.
Therefore, it is essential to bring on new owners as soon as possible so that they can get established and essentially steady the ship before these new regulations take effect.
The ultimate goal is undoubtedly to fill The Hawthorns each week, and that can only be accomplished by elevating the Baggies to a competitive level.
That is presently the case because of Carlos Corberan’s efforts. There’s no reason Albion can’t succeed with the Spaniard leading the team and some summer squad investment.
